Toronto Roller Derby and the Roller Derby World Cup
The Roller Derby World Cup has become a global celebration of the sport’s passion, athleticism, and diversity and from the very beginning, Toronto Roller Derby (ToRD) has been at the heart of it all. In December 2011, Toronto made history by hosting the inaugural Roller Derby World Cup, welcoming teams from around the world to the birthplace of modern flat-track competition. That landmark event marked not just the beginning of a global tournament, but also solidified ToRD’s place as a cornerstone of international roller derby.
Since that first groundbreaking tournament, Toronto Roller Derby has maintained a powerful presence at every World Cup, not only through athletes, but through dedicated officials who help keep the game safe, fair, and competitive. This year, ToRD is proud to have Jennifer and Professor Vex representing the league on the world stage as officials, continuing a tradition of excellence.
Past officials from ToRD have included Penny Whistler and Samiracle, both of whom brought professionalism and integrity to the international track. Their continued contributions reflect the strong officiating culture fostered within the Toronto Roller Derby community.
But ToRD’s impact doesn’t stop there. The league has seen numerous skaters go on to represent their heritage and passion for the sport across a variety of national and borderless diaspora teams. Skaters from ToRD have proudly competed with:
- Team Canada
- Team Portugal
- Team Philippines
- Team Indigenous
- Jewish Roller Derby
- Team Salaam
This deep and ongoing involvement showcases the diversity, dedication, and talent that Toronto Roller Derby brings to the international scene. Whether on skates or on the infield in stripes, ToRD’s athletes and officials represent the city with pride and a commitment to growing the sport across borders.
As roller derby continues to evolve, ToRD remains a proud contributor to the global community, a league that helped start it all and continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in derby.
We’ll see you on the track.
