The event, hosted and run by members of Toronto Roller Derby, Montreal Roller Derby  and Durham Region Roller Derby, saw six Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) sanctioned games be played over two days. After the sanctioned games, Durham Region hosted an open scrimmage. All games were played at the King City Arena & Community Centre in King City, Ontario.

Alongside Toronto’s All-Stars and Montreal’s Sexpos, participating teams were Hammer City Roller Derby’s Eh! Team, Queen City Roller Derby’s Lake Effect Furies, and both the All-Stars and Yankee Brutals from Connecticut Roller Derby. All six teams played two games over the course of the weekend.

Of course, without any officials, these teams could not have played any games at all. Thankfully, a wonderful team of referees and non-skating officials came together for the tournament, led by Tournament Head Referee Yogi, Tournament Head NSO Matante and Games Tournament Oversight Officer Zed. They and all the other members of the officiating crew made sure of a safe, fair and fun weekend of derby.

The tournament kicked off at 12:30 PM on Saturday, March 21, where the Montreal Sexpos defeated the Connecticut All-Stars, 199-131. This competitive, exciting game set the tone for the rest of the day, as the 2:30 PM game saw the Connecticut Yankee Brutals edge out a close win over the Hammer City Eh! Team, 188-146. The Sexpos would then return to the track at 6 PM for the final game of the day, falling to the Queen City Lake Effect Furies, 232-80.

Alongside the games being played, fans were treated to an opportunity to shop merchandise from all the leagues playing in the tournament, as well as the tournament’s sponsors.

Sunday, March 22 kicked off bright and early, as the local favourites, the Toronto All-Stars took on the Yankee Brutals in the first-ever matchup between the two teams, winning the 9:30 AM game 249-91. 11:30 AM saw the Lake Effect Furies and the Connecticut All-Stars match up in both teams’ second game of the weekend, with the Furies coming out ahead, 249-87. The final WFTDA-sanctioned game of the tournament came at 1:30 PM, and saw the Toronto All-Stars finish off their weekend with a 278-96 victory over Hammer City.

The festivities were not over yet, however, as Durham Region Roller Derby’s open scrimmage started up at 3:30 PM, and featured skaters from all three hosting leagues as well as Hammer City, Ottawa Valley Roller Derby, Royal City Royal Derby, Peterborough Area Roller Derby, Renegade Derby Dames, Hogtown Roller Derby, Minnesota Roller Derby, and more. Skaters of various levels were all able to compete in a wonderful game that was a perfect way to close out the weekend.

Toronto Roller Derby thanks all of our fans for their support, and hopes you will continue to follow the team as we plan more games and events for this upcoming season. In a packed weekend showdown of emerging talent, the Toxins played five hard-fought games, showing grit, growth, and a ton of team spirit.

The tournament kicked off with a nail-biter against Durham Region Roller Derby (DRRD), where the Toxins fell just short with a final score of 40–46. Undeterred, they bounced back in style with a decisive 84–28 victory over the SLAM-mateurs, making a clear statement that they came to compete.

Momentum stayed high in their third match against Eagle Beavers, with the Toxins edging out a thrilling 64–62 win that had fans on the edge of their seats. They faced a tough challenge in their fourth game against Roller Derby Quebec, ultimately falling 32–77, but staying determined as ever.

The final match saw the Toxins rise once more, beating Les Outsiders du Quebec 62–48 and securing their spot for 3rd.

2025 Roller Derby World Cup https://torontorollerderby.com/2025/07/08/2025-roller-derby-world-cup/ Tue, 08 Jul 2025 21:24:37 +0000 https://torontorollerderby.com/?p=672 Toronto Roller Derby and the Roller Derby World Cup

The Roller Derby World Cup has become a global celebration of the sport’s passion, athleticism, and diversity and from the very beginning, Toronto Roller Derby (ToRD) has been at the heart of it all. In December 2011, Toronto made history by hosting the inaugural Roller Derby World Cup, welcoming teams from around the world to the birthplace of modern flat-track competition. That landmark event marked not just the beginning of a global tournament, but also solidified ToRD’s place as a cornerstone of international roller derby.

Since that first groundbreaking tournament, Toronto Roller Derby has maintained a powerful presence at every World Cup, not only through athletes, but through dedicated officials who help keep the game safe, fair, and competitive. This year, ToRD is proud to have Jennifer and Professor Vex representing the league on the world stage as officials, continuing a tradition of excellence.

Past officials from ToRD have included Penny Whistler and Samiracle, both of whom brought professionalism and integrity to the international track. Their continued contributions reflect the strong officiating culture fostered within the Toronto Roller Derby community.

But ToRD’s impact doesn’t stop there. The league has seen numerous skaters go on to represent their heritage and passion for the sport across a variety of national and borderless diaspora teams. Skaters from ToRD have proudly competed with:

  • Team Canada
  • Team Portugal
  • Team Philippines
  • Team Indigenous
  • Jewish Roller Derby
  • Team Salaam

This deep and ongoing involvement showcases the diversity, dedication, and talent that Toronto Roller Derby brings to the international scene. Whether on skates or on the infield in stripes, ToRD’s athletes and officials represent the city with pride and a commitment to growing the sport across borders.

As roller derby continues to evolve, ToRD remains a proud contributor to the global community, a league that helped start it all and continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in derby.

We’ll see you on the track.
