Meanwhile, the Death Track Dolls finished in first place in the regular season going 3-0, and played the 1-2 game at the April 8 Quarterfinals. There the 2nd-place Chicks Ahoy! came out on top. The Dolls get another shot at advancing in this Semifinal. The loser will be done for the season, but the winner will advance to Battle for the Boot XI in June.

ToRD Marches 4th towards Playoffs

Toronto Roller Derby 11th seasonWith each team two games into the season, Toronto Roller Derby wraps the regular season on Saturday March 4 with another home team doubleheader. Playoff implications are in the air, with the undefeated Death Track Dolls (2-0) taking on the Smoke City Bandits (1-1) in the opener, and the Chicks Ahoy! (1-1) facing the Gore-Gore Rollergirls (0-2) in game 2. Final playoff positions are still undecided for all four teams, with the Quarterfinals coming April 8. Here’s a look at where things stand ahead of this Saturday’s doubleheader:

2017 ToRD Regular Season Standings*

* = through February 11

Death Track Dolls

Chicks Ahoy!

Smoke City Bandits

Gore-Gore Rollergirls

PF = points for, PA = points against

After Win-Loss record, the tiebreaker in the standings is point differential, aka +/-. For example, currently the Chicks Ahoy! and Smoke City Bandits have identical Win-Loss records, but the Chicks Ahoy! own a superior point differential, in fact, even better than that of the first-place Death Track Dolls. If the Chicks win this weekend and the Dolls lose, that advantage could bump the Chicks into first, depending on the point spreads this week. Similarly, should the Gore-Gore Rollergirls beat the Chicks, and if the Dolls beat the Bandits, there would be a three-way tie for second, sorted out by point spreads. There’s going to be a lot of math this weekend!

Tickets are $18 at the door, or $12 in advance at our outlets or online here. There are also discounts when purchasing online tickets when you buy 10-packs!

2017 Battle for the Boot playoffs

Toronto Roller Derby is continuing to employ a page playoffs structure for the home team playoffs. Here’s how it works:

Quarterfinals: 3rd place team vs 4th place team, and 1st place team vs 2nd place team. The winner of 1st vs 2nd advances directly to the Battle for the Boot in June. The loser of 1st vs 2nd stays alive to play the winner of 3rd vs 4th in the Semifinal. The loser of 3rd vs 4th is eliminated.

Semifinal: The winner of 3rd vs 4th plays the loser of 1st vs 2nd. The winner advances to the Battle of the Boot, and the loser is eliminated.

Battle for the Boot X: The Winner of the 1st vs 2nd Quarterfinal plays the winner of the Semifinal for the right to claim the Boot, Toronto Roller Derby’s coveted trophy.

Playoff seedings: Teams are ranked in order of their win-loss records; in the event of any teams sharing the same win-loss record, score differential will be used as the tiebreaker.

Betties go up in Smoke as 2017 Welcomes The Bandits

Smoke City History

The history of Toronto Roller Derby – and indeed, the birth of flat track roller derby in Canada as a whole – is inextricably connected to that of the Smoke City Betties. Alyson McMullen (Kandy Barr), owner of RollerBug Skate Company, posted on her website in 2005 calling out for interested skaters to form a roller derby team, and by early 2006 an D Dayorganizational meeting was held that led to the formation of the Betties, who began practicing that spring. Around the same time, Scooter and Trevstopher, along with Jeff (Jeffro Speedwagon) and Sally Brabant (Mach Wheels) had launched the Toronto Terrors. By April, the Terrors had subdivided into what would become four of ToRD’s original home teams – the Bay Street Bruisers, the Chicks Ahoy!, the Death Track Dolls and the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. But it was Betties D-Day, hosted by the Smoke City Betties in August 2006 that solidified things. Shortly afterwards, the Terrors and Betties joined forces, and after the Betties themselves had subdivided and created the Gore-Gore Rollergirls, Toronto Roller Derby was born.

Since our first season in 2007, Smoke City has been a constant part of our home league, with over a hundred skaters wearing the black and blue, including Battle for the Boot appearances in 2009 and 2012, and the team’s first championship title at long last in 2015.

Make no mistake – Smoke City is Toronto Roller Derby, and Smoke City is Toronto. And it’s with that spirit that we are excited to announce a new team name and identity: please welcome the Smoke City Bandits!

Smoke City Bandits

SCB Doubling down on their Toronto pride, the Smoke City Bandits are here to continue a roller derby legacy in Toronto, wearing a familiar face. Masks on, tails out, the Bandits pay homage to one of the city’s famous features, Raccoon Nation. Adaptable, sneaky, and efficient; with a derriere that just won’t quit, the raccoon embodies many characteristics the skaters of Smoke City feel in themselves. Don’t be taken in by their cute faces; these crafty skaters will swindle points on the track before you even know they’re there.

The Smoke City Bandits are continuing in the Smoke City tradition and taking their place in our four-team home league starting this January. Stay tuned for announcements about their 2017 roster and our Season 11 schedule, so you can see them Smoke This! coming soon.
