March 2017 MVPs of the Month – Penny and Samir!

Penny Whistler and Samiracle

Penny Whistler and Samiracle – photos by Neil Gunner

This month’s MVP shout out goes to this dynamic duo in stripes, without whom we literally could not do this: Penny Whistler and Samiracle!

Their tireless efforts ensure that ToRD has full ref crews for each of our games and this is no small feat! Did you know that roller derby games rely on crews of 7 skating officials (plus an alernate) watching pack play for penalties and points with double that number of non-skating officials managing the penalty box, tracking lines, and keeping score? Together, Penny and Samir have not only been refereeing derby games for many many years, but also work to recruit, train, and organize Toronto’s on and off skate officials.

This reffing dream team not only coordinates officiating efforts at home but represent our league at tournaments abroad. These two are often called on to work ref crews at the highest levels. Last year alone, Samir refereed the WFTDA Division 2 tournament in Wichita, plus the Division 1 Playoffs in Vancouver and Montreal, where he was joined by Penny. Penny was additionally invited to Beijing (!!!) for the International HeForShe Roller Derby Invitational sponsored by UN Women China, where she officiated the very first public roller derby game in China. Both Penny and Samir are recognized internationally in the community for their incredible commitment to the sport and it is our turn to recognize them for all that they do to keep us safe on the track.

Please join us in recognizing these incredible volunteers, Penny Whistler and Samiracle!

Interested in joining Penny, Samir and the rest of our officiating crew, either on skates or off? Contact officials@torontorollerderby.com for more information!

ToRD Marches 4th towards Playoffs

Toronto Roller Derby 11th seasonWith each team two games into the season, Toronto Roller Derby wraps the regular season on Saturday March 4 with another home team doubleheader. Playoff implications are in the air, with the undefeated Death Track Dolls (2-0) taking on the Smoke City Bandits (1-1) in the opener, and the Chicks Ahoy! (1-1) facing the Gore-Gore Rollergirls (0-2) in game 2. Final playoff positions are still undecided for all four teams, with the Quarterfinals coming April 8. Here’s a look at where things stand ahead of this Saturday’s doubleheader:

After Win-Loss record, the tiebreaker in the standings is point differential, aka +/-. For example, currently the Chicks Ahoy! and Smoke City Bandits have identical Win-Loss records, but the Chicks Ahoy! own a superior point differential, in fact, even better than that of the first-place Death Track Dolls. If the Chicks win this weekend and the Dolls lose, that advantage could bump the Chicks into first, depending on the point spreads this week. Similarly, should the Gore-Gore Rollergirls beat the Chicks, and if the Dolls beat the Bandits, there would be a three-way tie for second, sorted out by point spreads. There’s going to be a lot of math this weekend!

2017 Battle for the Boot playoffs

Toronto Roller Derby is continuing to employ a page playoffs structure for the home team playoffs. Here’s how it works:

Quarterfinals: 3rd place team vs 4th place team, and 1st place team vs 2nd place team. The winner of 1st vs 2nd advances directly to the Battle for the Boot in June. The loser of 1st vs 2nd stays alive to play the winner of 3rd vs 4th in the Semifinal. The loser of 3rd vs 4th is eliminated.

Semifinal: The winner of 3rd vs 4th plays the loser of 1st vs 2nd. The winner advances to the Battle of the Boot, and the loser is eliminated.

Battle for the Boot X: The Winner of the 1st vs 2nd Quarterfinal plays the winner of the Semifinal for the right to claim the Boot, Toronto Roller Derby’s coveted trophy.

Playoff seedings: Teams are ranked in order of their win-loss records; in the event of any teams sharing the same win-loss record, score differential will be used as the tiebreaker.
