2015 Boot Quarterfinal brings date change, venue change

Toronto Roller Derby 2015 Remaining Schedule Quarterfinal

Toronto Roller Derby is coming downtown for the 2015 Battle for the Boot Quarterfinal, now scheduled for May 2 at Ted Reeve Arena! Here’s what you need to know:

What’s the date?

While the Quarterfinal was originally set for May 9, a scheduling conflict has led us to change not only the date but also the location. Ticket holders and Season Pass holders will see the old date on their tickets, but there is no Toronto Roller Derby event on May 9, and tickets and passes will be honoured instead on Saturday May 2.

Where is Ted Reeve Arena?

Ted Reeve Arena is located at 175 Main Street at Gerrard – just south of the Main Street subway station on the Line 2 Bloor-Danforth line. There is ample, free parking on the premises. Ted Reeve Arena is a year-round sports complex, complete with permanent tiered seating and snack bar, where our skaters and fans will be easily accommodated. As usual, you can sit up in the stands or sit trackside – bring a blanket or folding chair if you prefer the latter! Toronto Roller Derby has held Clam Slam at Ted Reeve the past two years, and will be doing so again on June 25 for this year’s edition.

Who’s playing on May 2?

This event marks the first time since 2009 that Toronto Roller Derby is hosting a home team event in a hockey arena – we’re going back to our roots for this one! And what better way to do that than to bring you the first event of the 2015 Battle for the Boot Playoffs. The Quarterfinal is a new addition to our playoff structure this year, and pits the regular season 3rd and 4th-place teams – the Smoke City Betties and Chicks Ahoy!, respectively – going head-to-head, with the winner advancing to the Semifinal on May 23, where they will take on the the 2nd-place Death Track Dolls.

The second game of the night will feature ToRD’s B team the Bay Street Bruisers hosting Plan B from Tri-City Roller Derby. Thus far in 2015, the Bruisers have a perfect 4-0 record, and are looking to continue that run against a tough opponent from Tri-City.

4pm: Doors open

5pm: Smoke City Betties vs Chicks Ahoy! 2015 Boot Quarterfinal

7pm: Bay Street Bruisers vs Tri-City Plan B

Quad City Chaos 2015 a smashing success

This past weekend Toronto Roller Derby hosted the 6th edition of Quad City Chaos, and it was the biggest and most successful and entertaining one yet!

  • The biggest, as for the first time we held 9 games over the weekend – 6 WFTDA-sanctioned games, and 3 regulation B-team games
  • The most successful – some of the closest games ever at this tournament, with the biggest sanctioned-game point spread only 55 points (CN Power vs Boston Massacre)
  • The most entertaining, with multiple lead changes in almost every game, and incredible hits! Such as this one captured by George Pelekis and posted on his TOderby flickr page, of CN Power’s Lady Gag-Ya taking out Steel Hurtin’s Snot Rocket Science, who through sheer force of will manages to stay in bounds and keep going:

The results

Sanctioned Games
As mentioned, this weekend’s 6 WFTDA-sanctioned games had some of the tightest scores we’ve ever seen at Quad City Chaos, with multiple games being decided only in the dying minutes. With all 4 teams currently ranked in the top 40 of the WFTDA (and Rideau Valley clearly showing that their #39 slot is only temporary and that they do indeed belong in Division 1), every game was an unpredictable battle. This weekend was noteworthy also as the first time since 2012 (and only the second QCC ever) that CN Power went undefeated at 3-0 in their own tournament. The scores:

Game 1: #39 Rideau Valley Vixens 165142 #29 Steel Hurtin’
Game 2: #28 Toronto CN Power 229174 #25 Boston Massacre
Game 4: #25 Boston Massacre 169127 #29 Steel Hurtin’
Game 5: #28 Toronto CN Power 186154 #39 Rideau Valley Vixens
Game 7: #25 Boston Massacre 182159 #39 Rideau Valley Vixens
Game 6: #28 Toronto CN Power 235191 #29 Steel Hurtin’

B-team Regulation Games
In B-team action, the Bay Street Bruisers continued their undefeated run at Quad City Chaos, although that streak was in serious jeopardy in their second game against the Boston B-party, who led for the majority of the game, with the Bruisers pulling off the come-from-behind victory on the final jam. The scores:

Game 3: Toronto Bay Street Bruisers 253144 Rideau Valley Sirens
Game 6: Toronto Bay Street Bruisers 184180 Boston B-Party
Game 8: Toronto Bay Street Bruisers 31969 Steel Beamers

Betties and Dolls wrap up home team Regular Season March 7th

Toronto Roller Derby Event 5

The Gore-Gore Rollergirls have already wrapped up first place in our home team regular season with their victory over the Chicks AHoy! on February 21st. Still up for grabs, however, are second and third place, and that – along with the playoff seedings – will get settled on Saturday March 7, when the Death Track Dolls (1-1) and Smoke City Betties (1-1) hit the track. Whichever team comes out on top will secure a second-pace finish, while the other will settle for 3rd. We know this is going to be a heck of a battle on the flat track – consider this: while both of these teams were defeated by the Gores earlier this season, the Dolls only lost by 5 points, and the Betties only by 7. We’re in the throes of possibly the tightest ToRD home season ever, and this game will not disappoint!

Please note the special start time for this event: Doors open at 6pm, and the game gets underway at 7.

Chicks! vs Gores, plus D-VAS hosting Woodstock February 21st

Toronto Roller Derby Event 4

On Saturday February 21st, Toronto Roller Derby’s home team season continues, as the Gore-Gore Rollergirls take on the Chicks Ahoy! in the headlining game at 7pm. The Gores are currently unbeaten (2-0) after a couple of nail-biters, and are looking to lock up first place and a prime slot in the 2015 Battle for the Boot playoffs. The Chicks Ahoy are looking for their first victory of the season (0-2), having played two very hard-fought games so far this season. In the opener at 5pm, our rookie team, the D-VAS hosts the Woodstock Warriors, in what should be an epic grudge match, as the teams split their two games in 2014. As usual, doors at The Bunker will open at 4pm.

In the opener, The D-VAS host The Orangeville Fox Force Five, and then in game 2, our B Team The Bay Street Bruisers host the Royal City Brute-Leggers from Guelph, who are celebrating their new status as a full member of the WFTDA. 2015 Home Season Continues January 31

Toronto Roller Derby Home Opener

Our home season continues on Saturday January 31 with another home team doubleheader. Season 9 started with a bang this past Saturday with a rematch of the 2014 Battle for the Boot, and the Death Track Dolls and Gore-Gore Rollergirls did not disappoint. In a game riddled with lead changes and tie scores, this game had the fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The Gores went into halftime with only a 4 point lead, and pulled off the victory in the end 151-146, ToRD’s tightest game in recent memory, and the first Dolls home loss since 2012. In the second game, the Betties made some noise with an explosive performance, firing on all cylinders, and won for the first time since 2013 with an impressive win over the Chicks, 238-117. CTV News Toronto was there, and covered our league’s search for a new home. See that video clip here.

And now our home season continues on Saturday January 31 with another home team doubleheader. Doors will open at 4pm, and the first game will get underway at 5, with both the Death Track Dolls and Chicks Ahoy! looking for their first victories of the season. Then at 7, our two unbeaten foes are the Gore-Gore Rollergirls and the Smoke City Betties. By night’s end, only one of our teams will be undefeated – who will it be? You’ll have to be at The Bunker to find out!
