Fans Choose Rather Equally Matched Teams!

by titmouse Mon, March 15, 2010

In a wicked sweet case of “Hellz yeah this idea worked out awesomely!”, the Fan Choice scrimmage went off without a hitch last Saturday. Twenty minutes before the bout started, 32 ladies lined up along the track while 32 of their luckiest fans got to hand off their white or black golf tee to a player to pick the teams.

With almost no time to strategize, these ladies hit the track as a team to finish their warm up, forming crazy tight packs almost instantly – it was like each team came from the same womb. This scrimmage was the first scrimmage for several of the ladies, recently drafted to ToRD’s four teams. It was impressive to see them apply the skills they learned in months of drills to the track (READ: Our Fresh Meat program is awesome! Email freshmeat@torontorollerderby.com to join the next round)!

Right from the start you could tell both teams would be a close match. After 10 minutes, the score was 14-09 for the Black team. Black continued to maintain the lead through the first half, entering halftime ahead 60-31. I’m going to shout out mad kudos to Sail Her Poon, who more than double Grand-Slammed during one of her jams! After a short break, during which the ladies hydrated, patted each other on the back, and bounced around full of energy, they were back for the second half.

White brought it on like Donky Kong, quickly gaining points and climbing their team back up towards Black. With 12 minutes to go in the half, White finally pulled ahead of Black! The rest of the game was intense, very neck-and-neck. You could tell everyone was giving it their all, even as they got tired. There was barely a moment in the last 15 minutes of the bout that there WASN’T at least one player from each team sitting in the penalty box.

With less than a minute to go, the final jam started. White was leading with 96, but Black was right on their tail with 92. Unfortunatly, it wasn’t to be. The Black jammer got stuck in the pack while White fought her way through, and managed to score her team an additional 5 points.

Final score: White 101, Black 92.

Great skate ladies :D

apologies if I got anyone’s name/number wrong, the sheets I took them from were a little scribbly

Fan's Choice Scrimmage - March 13th! 1 comments

by titmouse Tue, March 2, 2010

It’s about bloody time for another scrimmage, woo!! This time you can feel like you helped make it happen (really, you guys ALWAYS help make it happen. YAY FANS!

32 Ladies.
32 Fans.

What happens when you put the power of the teams into the hands of the fans? I’m not sure, but we’re about to find out!

On Saturday March 13th, the first 32 fans through the door will be given either a black or white chip. There will be 32 skaters suited up and ready to play – handing your chip to a player determines what team they are on! Isn’t it utter madness?? These ladies then have < 1 hour to don their team’s colour and stragetize! Ooooooooooooo…..

Be at the doors promptly at 4PM for your chance to get one of the highly coveted chips! The bout kicks off at 5PM. Only 5$ entrance to see what happens!

Did I use enough exclamation marks in this post or what?!!!!!

It was a brutal bout from the start. At half-time the CUbs had pulled ahead of the cougars 82 – 16 (ouch). All the teams looked like they were having fun just being on their skates though – I definitely saw at least one leg whip, and a few successful passing the star attempts!! Way to level up ladies! In the second half the Cougars stepped it up, more than tripling their first period score – unfortunately, the Cubs were unrelenting, and kept pounding in the hurt.

FInal Score: Cougars 58, Cubs 175

Congratulations cubs!
