North America's largest flat-track roller derby league. CN Power, Bay Street Bruisers, Chicks Ahoy!, D-VAS, Death Track Dolls, Gore-Gore Rollergirls, Smoke City Betties
The Chicks Ahoy!, Death Track Dolls, Gore-Gore Rollergirls, and Smoke City Betties are travelling to Montreal to compete in a cross-Canada tournament against fellow derby leagues! For many of the new skaters, this is the first time they’ll be on the track in a competitive bout of derby – wish us all good luck!
Sorry for the delay folks, I’ve been recovering from QCC – but now I’m back with all my journalistic splendor!
This past weekend Toronto hosted Montreal, Vancouver, and our neighbours Hamilton in the first ever Quad City Chaos tournament! It was a smashingly delicous weekend of hard-hitting Canadian derby action. Keep reading for the tasty rundown.
Game 1 – CN Power vs. the Terminal City All-Stars
CN Power kicked off QCC sporting the snazzy new CN Power logo – same bright pink tops, more CN Tower fist squeezing action. CN Power took first Lead Jammer to rack up points, and were off to a strong start. They maintained the head through out the first half, entering intermission up 66-24.
The All-Stars returned in the second half determined to catch up, steadily clawing back points to close the gap. With two minutes left in the second half, the crowd gasped as DefeCaitlin hit the floor and stayed down from a nasty elbow to the head. She got back up under her own power but sat out the rest of the bout.
By the last jam, the All-Stars had come back to within 15 points of CN Power, but unfortunately for them Lunch Box gained Lead Jammer status, and ran out the clock.
Final Score: 97 – 79 CN Power.
Game 2 – CN Power vs. Hammer City Eh! Team
With only an hour’s rest since the last bout, CN Power hit the track (with a few line up changes). The Eh! Team got a strong start and lead for the first 15 minutes, thanks in part to an 18 point jam by Carla Coma. CN Power players, tired but determined, used their second wind to pull ahead 38-36. Alarmed, the Eh! Team pulled a sneaky Passing the Star to pull back the lead 41-38. The first half ended with Hammer City ahead 55-49.
The second period started off slow – both teams had revisited their game plans during the break, and a hardcore game of derby strategy was to be watched. Hammer City holds on to their slight lead through most of the second half, until Lunch Box pulls them ahead 72-70 with a 10 point jam. It was an exciting end to the bout, as both teams spent the last 10 minutes neck and neck, literally swapping lead position every jam until the inevitable – a tie, going into the final jams of the bout. CN Power pulled ahead by two points heading into the last jam. Starting with 32 seconds left in the second half, CN Power gained Lead Jammer status as the clock ran out and they called the jam.
Final Score: 89 – 87 CN Power.
Game 3 – MTLRD New Skids on the Block vs. Terminal City All-Stars
Unfortunatly, I missed this game, because I’m an idiot who wore 4” platform boots all day not realizing she would be standing on her feet for 12 hours, and I had to not be doing that anymore. Real smart titmouse. So instead, I’ll present you with my version of what I’m sure happened:
NSOTB skated out and took an early lead in the bout. Driven into a fit of rage by the vibrant neon colours of the MTL uniforms, the five Terminal City skaters on the track, lead by Avi Hater, used their magic decoder rings to transform into a HUGEPREHISTORICDRAGONFLY. They zipped towards the MTL pack, deafening the fans with the buzz of their speedy wings. Alarmed, but unwilling to give up that easily MTL started stomping their feet and chanting. The Hangar filled with an unearthly roar, and the floor shook, as a GIANTDINOSAUR burst forth from the center of the track, toppling the poor Refs and Stats people into the nearby bleachers. Luckily for all of you peoples, I left my camera behind and conveniently pointed at the track recording in video mode, so that I could share the amazement with all of you.
It totally went exactly like that, I swear.
Final Score: 160 – 55 New Skids on the Block
Game 4 – MTLRD New Skids on the Block vs. CN Power
Somewhat freshly rested (but still an idiot wearing boots with heels) and caffinated, I returned to witness MTL at it again – totally showing it to our CN Power team. To give them credit, CN Power didn’t look like they were making it easy. They were a bunch of mean, pink, skating machines, consistently getting in MTLs face and making them work for their win. Those ladies have some crazy good skill though – cutting through the pack like butter, and a preternatural sense of where everyone on the track is, so they ran away with the win.
Final Score: 229 – 45 New Skids on the Block
Game 5 – Hammer City Eh! Team vs. Terminal City All-Stars
You could tell from the start that both these teams had it in for the other. Both teams were evenly matched, and the game played close all afternoon, often times with only 10 points differentiating the teams. Terminal City held the lead for most of the first half, until the second last Jam when Hammer City pulled ahead 46-44. With the All-Star’s jammer in the box for the last jam of the first half, Hammer City powered through for an additional 14 points, ending the half up 60-44.
Hammer City dominated the second half, while the All-Stars worked to close the point gap. The most exciting moment game at the end, when the All-Stars were only down by 14 points. The last jam kicked off and Rollergirl (TC) took lead jammer – what followed was the greatest display of SERIOUS pack strategy I’ve ever seen. Terminal City closed around a member of the Eh! Team and slowed the whole pack down almost to a stop – Rollergirl whipped around the track and through the pack in no time. The All-Stars tried to hold the pack down for her to come around again but Hammer City has caught on to the plan and won’t be tricked by the same stragecy again. The fans are all on their feet cheering wildly for a last minute come back, but to no avail.
Final Score: 115 – 104 Eh! Team

Supporting the team is like… climbing the tower yourself! Minus the part where your body will ache and your muscles will seize for the following week. On top of that, your money will be going to help a great cause, saving cute animals! (I want a house hippo…)
Crazy thanks to those of you who have already contributed to the climb!!! With just under a month to go, the team has met their initial fund raising goal… so they’ve challenged themselves to double it! Double the pleasure, double the fun?
For those of you that can’t get enough Toronto Roller Derby and Physics, tune into Daily Planet on the Discovery Channel tomorrow (Wednesday), March 17, 2010 at 7:00pm and 11:00 pm EST.
For The Daily Planet’s Wild Sports Week the hostess with the mostest, Ziya Tong, straps on some skates and smelly gear and chats with Shera Venge about the physics of roller derby. Focusing on the hard hits and speed, titmouse and Speedin Hawking show how their skills utilize the laws of physics to be an effective athlete. Filmed at ToRD’s very own Hangar in Downsview Park this is sure to be the wildest sport they show this week! Don’t miss it!
ToRD wants to send a special shout out to Amanda Buckiewicz and Ziya Tong for all their amazing work and look forward to seeing them both on skates in the near future!
If you miss it, you should be able to watch it online Thursday. Check out the action at 7:28 of clip 1 from the 17th of March.

In a wicked sweet case of “Hellz yeah this idea worked out awesomely!”, the Fan Choice scrimmage went off without a hitch last Saturday. Twenty minutes before the bout started, 32 ladies lined up along the track while 32 of their luckiest fans got to hand off their white or black golf tee to a player to pick the teams.

With almost no time to strategize, these ladies hit the track as a team to finish their warm up, forming crazy tight packs almost instantly – it was like each team came from the same womb. This scrimmage was the first scrimmage for several of the ladies, recently drafted to ToRD’s four teams. It was impressive to see them apply the skills they learned in months of drills to the track (READ: Our Fresh Meat program is awesome! Email freshmeat@torontorollerderby.com to join the next round)!
Right from the start you could tell both teams would be a close match. After 10 minutes, the score was 14-09 for the Black team. Black continued to maintain the lead through the first half, entering halftime ahead 60-31. I’m going to shout out mad kudos to Sail Her Poon, who more than double Grand-Slammed during one of her jams! After a short break, during which the ladies hydrated, patted each other on the back, and bounced around full of energy, they were back for the second half.
White brought it on like Donky Kong, quickly gaining points and climbing their team back up towards Black. With 12 minutes to go in the half, White finally pulled ahead of Black! The rest of the game was intense, very neck-and-neck. You could tell everyone was giving it their all, even as they got tired. There was barely a moment in the last 15 minutes of the bout that there WASN’T at least one player from each team sitting in the penalty box.
With less than a minute to go, the final jam started. White was leading with 96, but Black was right on their tail with 92. Unfortunatly, it wasn’t to be. The Black jammer got stuck in the pack while White fought her way through, and managed to score her team an additional 5 points.
Final score: White 101, Black 92.
Great skate ladies :D
apologies if I got anyone’s name/number wrong, the sheets I took them from were a little scribbly
It’s about bloody time for another scrimmage, woo!! This time you can feel like you helped make it happen (really, you guys ALWAYS help make it happen. YAY FANS!
32 Ladies.
32 Fans.
What happens when you put the power of the teams into the hands of the fans? I’m not sure, but we’re about to find out!
On Saturday March 13th, the first 32 fans through the door will be given either a black or white chip. There will be 32 skaters suited up and ready to play – handing your chip to a player determines what team they are on! Isn’t it utter madness?? These ladies then have < 1 hour to don their team’s colour and stragetize! Ooooooooooooo…..
Be at the doors promptly at 4PM for your chance to get one of the highly coveted chips! The bout kicks off at 5PM. Only 5$ entrance to see what happens!
Did I use enough exclamation marks in this post or what?!!!!!
Well… the title pretty much says it all. Those of you who weren’t there, you missed something preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeety spectacular. CN Power was out in their finest form, knocking the Vixens around all over the track and skating circles around them (literally!). By 5 minutes into the bout, CN Power had already managed to pull ahead 24-2.
That didn’t seem like a big enough lead to Landshark, who on her next Jam skated through the pack 4 times for a total of 15 points! Not to be outdone, Defecaitlin followed up in the next jam for another whopping 15 points! WOW!
The insane racking up of points continued, and by the half CN Power was ahead 108-20. CN Power fans were going crazy, but I think the ones supporting the Vixens were pretty stunned.
While the teams chugged water and discussed strategy for the second half, the rockin’ tones of Ginger St James & The Grinders filled the Hangar with dancing fans – I saw your foot bopping, don’t try to hide it!
After 20 minutes of awesome music, merch, pizza, and beer buying, fans ran back to their seats to see what would happen in the conclusion of the bout. With a sharp whistle blow, they were off!
CN Power didn’t relent – they just kept givin’er to the Rideau Valley Vixens. There was a tense moment when Landshark barrel rolled over Mega Bouche, but she somehow made it look graceful.
Down to the wire and clearly striving to hit 200 points, the final jam ended with a successful Passing the Star play (see 25:07 in part 2 of the video) as Landshark and Mach Wheels teamed up to rack the points up to 200. Unfortunately, the Jam clock ran out before she could make it around a second time to score the elusive 1 more point. Le Sigh!
Regardless, a great game played by all!! Thanks to RVV, their refs and their fans for coming to our humble home to challenge us! Better luck next time?

Thursday, April 15th. The Opponent: The CN Tower. The Goal: To show the tower who’s boss.
This year CN Power has assembled a team of the finest in fine derby girls to tackle the CN Tower Stair Climb in support of the World Wildlife Fund. WWF-Canada’s goal is to raise 1 million $$ to help raise awareness about climate change and the effects it’s having on our planet. Don’t think climate change exists? Look around you! There was no Summer of 2009, and this ‘winter’ is pretty pathetic so far. Good job Canadian weather, way to have snow for the WINTEROLYMPICS.
Skaters signed up so far include: G-Force, Dyna Hurtcha, Betty Bomber, Demolition Dawn and Land Shark!
You can help the team and show your support by sponsoring the team! Or visit www.wwf.ca/cntower and click on “Team Challenge” then “Sponsor A Team”. The team is registered as “Toronto Roller Derby CN Power”.
Some facts about the climb:
– this is the 20 year anniversary of the climb
– there are 1776 stairs between you and sweet sweet relief
– that’s 144 flights of stairs!

Well, that scrimmage went not at all like I had expected it to! But still a success! ToRD welcomed visiting skaters from the Queen City Rollergirls, the Tri-City Rollergirls, and the Forest City Derby Girls to participate in the scrimmage. These lovely ladies meshed right in and dished hits out all over the place!
It was a brutal bout from the start. At half-time the CUbs had pulled ahead of the cougars 82 – 16 (ouch). All the teams looked like they were having fun just being on their skates though – I definitely saw at least one leg whip, and a few successful passing the star attempts!! Way to level up ladies! In the second half the Cougars stepped it up, more than tripling their first period score – unfortunately, the Cubs were unrelenting, and kept pounding in the hurt.

Missed the show? Watch online! I won’t ruin the surprise and tell you who won – instead, I’ll let this picture do the talking:
And that is why I can’t go out unescorted.
More pictures will be added as they are accumulated…
ToRD is happy to have skaters representing the league as part of the Contact Sports Athletes team on Test The Nation, LIVE this Sunday at 8pm on CBC Television!!
Look for skaters Candy Crossbones, Demolition Dawn, Downright Dirty Dawson and Speedin’ Hawking on the Athlete’s bench, and a special appearance by Cherri Nova, Lady Gagya, Seka Destroy, Monichrome, Kung Fu Kitty, Brin Stone and Hum Dinger!!
Test The Nation is an interactive IQ test that pits 6 teams of stereotypes against each other and the viewing audience. You can play along at home online or with pen and paper. Compare your score against the Politicians, Nerds, Twins, Atheists, Believers, and Contact Sports Athletes! It’s hosted by (the incredibly dreamy) George Stroumboulopoulos and Carole MacNeil, so there’s eye candy if you’re not into the whole test thing.
I know what you’re thinking: “Jeez, I just don’t know what I’m going to do with my evening this Friday”. Well, ToRD can help! Just when you thought we were quiet in the off-season, we’re throwing a Rookie Challenge scrimmage!
7:30PM. The Hanger, Downsview Park. The 2009 Rookies will face off against last year’s Rookies. Come watch the action to get an early look at new skaters you will see this season!
Doors at 7PM, bout starts at 7:30. $5 donation accepted at the door.
The setting: Downsview Park. Quiet. Isolated. Remotely located north of Toronto. From 4pm onward, cars slowly creep over to one of the buildings at 75 Carl Hall Rd. Passengers disembark loaded TTC buses and patiently gather by the door. Inside, ladies stretch, decorate, set up, skate.
Around 7pm the sh*t hits the fan.
A crowd of over 1100 cheers wildly as the Gore-Gore Rollergirls and the Smoke City Betties enter the track, each team thrilled and determined to win the Boot. The Gores are looking to reclaim the trophy they won in 2007, but lost in 2008, while the Betties want payback for their only loss this season.
The whistle blows and their off! A hard-hitting, fast skating period ensues, with each team giving as good as they got. The Gores gained a lead early on in the first period, and skated hard to keep it. The Betties, not to get discouraged, gave it their all and started dishing out hits left, right and center, to the thunderous roar of the crowd. The period ended with the Gores ahead 62 – 41 with a skater in the penalty box for each team.
There was much resting and strategic planning over halftime. The crowd remained entertained by the supreme breakdancing skillz of the Fly Antics Crew. The merch line was overwhelmed with people craving their own little piece of ToRD. Before you knew it, halftime was over and it was time for the final half.
Skating their hearts out, both teams clammoured for the winning spot. The Betties came on strong early in the second half, trying to close the gap on the Gores, who retaliated in the following jams to increase their lead. The Gores held their lead through to the end, but not without difficulty – the Betties kept right on them, forcing everyone to put out their best. The last whistle blew and the crowd went wild! Gores take the boot, 129-88.
CONGRATULATIONS to the Gores on their win in an action-packed 2009! You gave it your all and it paid off.

Some of you might have heard about a little movie called Whip It – Drew Barrimore’s directorial debut based on a book written by a skater for the LA Derby Dolls.
The film debuts here in Toronto during the International Film Festival Sept 10-19, and who better to promote the film than your own Toronto Roller Derby?!
There will be a FREE exhibition bout in Young and Dundas square on Sunday September 13th/ as part of the WHIP IT promo featuring stars from the movie and your favorite ToRD skaters dressed as Hurl Scouts!
Promo starts at 4pm, with the first whistle blowing sometime around 6:30!
Don’t forget to come by, bring your noisemakers, and get louder with ToRD!
And as always, ToRD will be celebrating after the bout at Annex Wreck Room! Party starts at 10pm @ 794 Bathurst, just north of Bloor. Look for your favorite Toronto Roller Derby stars on the streets and on the dance floor dancing to the tunes of our very own DJ Misty Rock n Roll!
Yes I know the headline sucks. It’s late. I’m nursing a sprained ankle, and my ‘Made in Detroit’ ass can’t play this game. So, for now you get the essential information with an extra dash of salty until we can get someone more prolific and rested to write it up. Besides all this stuff is on the poster too. You should just show up and see for yourself that this is not a game you wanna miss.
I suppose you could also check out the Detroit Derby Girls’ website if you’re into that sort of thing.

Those who have been following, know this is the game of the season so far. The undefeated Gore-Gore Rollergirls take on the Death Track Dolls, who were taken down in their first game by the Smoke City Betties. This is the second game of the season for both teams, but don’t let that fool you – this game predicts which way the championships will go this year.

Toronto Roller Derby has been selected as the Honoured Group at this year’s Dyke March! We could not be more honoured, excited and inspired to be part of such an amazing event.
Come out and support Pride, ToRD and all of our queer skaters on Saturday June 27, 2pm while we help lead the March!
“The Dyke March is a grassroots event where women and trans people in LGBTTIQQ2S communities take over the streets of Toronto. The Dyke March is not a parade – it is a political demonstration of critical mass; a moment seized to revel in the strength, diversity and passion of LGBTTIQQ2S women and trans folk. The theme for Pride Week 2009 is “Can’t Stop, won’t stop!”.”
