Last Regular Season Bout!

by titmouse Wed, September 1, 2010

It’s the LAST BOUT ever of the regular season! (ha, almost caught you there)

Saturday, September 11th come down to The Hangar, Downsview Park to watch the Chicks Ahoy take on the Smoke City Betties! When these two teams last met in 2009, it was a tight game that kept everyone on the edge of their seat – and the Betties took it home 68 – 61. This year brings us different teams – with a heavy veteran roster, the Chicks are fighting strong. They put up a vicious battle against the Death Track Dolls, trading blows and the lead until the very end, and had a heartbreaking loss against the undefeated Gore-Gore Rollergirls. The Betties are taking a toll this season, sporting two losses in their ToRD regular season, but they have fire in their eyes, rocket juice in their skates, and a few bouts under their belts… who knows what will happen! You can be the first to know – but you gotta come to the bout :D

Tickets are on sale now in stores and online. To serve you better, we’ve switched out online ticketing solution from PayPal to BrownPaperTickets, so don’t be alarmed when you’re sent to their site to make your purchase. BrownPaperTickets is a fair-trade ticketing company, and the choice of derby leagues across North America! Also, we’ve changed our ticketing structure a little. Gone are the 10-pack tickets, and in are 6-pack tickets! For when your group just isn’t quite 10-ppl big, but you still want to save money! As always, individual tickets are still on sale.

Going to buy your ticket at the door? You can save too! TORD wants to help in the fight against hunger and is holding a food drive to support the Daily Bread Food Bank at the Chicks/Betties bout, Saturday September 11th.

Daily Bread Food Bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that is fighting to end hunger in our communities. Every year thousands of people across Toronto rely on food banks. Daily Bread serves these people through neighbourhood food banks and meal programs in over 170 member agencies.

Bring non-perishable food items to the Bout on September 11th to help support the cause and receive a $3 discount on your ticket!

Gores vs. Dolls - Aug 28! Silent Auction!

by titmouse Tue, August 24, 2010

Saturday, 7:30pm. The Hangar, Downsview Park. Red meets Leopard in a full on derby throwdown. Can you roar? ROAR!

When these two met in 2009, the Gores emerged victorious, claiming a 151 – 71 victory. The Dolls haven’t forgotten, and a year later they’re out for blood. The Gores are looking to keep their winning streak alive, unbeaten since 2008 Championship.

Bring your friends and family, it’s sure to be a good one! There’s something for everyone at a Toronto Roller Derby bout – music, live entertainment, sports, pizza, beer, and a hella -rocking atmosphere! Tickets are on sale online and in stores now!

BONUS: We will be holding a silent auction for a framed poster of pin-up model Bridgette Jean, posing with ToRD’s very own Landshark and Bambi – Bridgette herself will also be attending the bout. w00t!

Chicks Ahoy! vs Gore Gore Rollergirls - July 24th!

by titmouse Wed, July 14, 2010

CA vs. GGRG - July 24!

On Saturday July 24th, the Chicks Ahoy will take on the Gore Gore Roller Girls. This is the second bout of 2010 for both these teams, and they’re coming into it with 1-0 (W-L) records – but that’s going to change after this bout, as there are no ties in derby. Only one team of feisty ladies can go home with the win.

The last time these two teams faced off was the 2009 Season Opener, during which the Gores took home the win. The face of both teams has changed since then, so its open to opinions and fans as to who will win. Let the bickering begin!

Tickets are on sale now online and in stores near you!

Cambridge indie band Dérive will be providing entertainment at the halftime – non-stop fun, music, and good times, courtesy of ToRD!

Smoke City Betties vs. Death Track Dolls - This Saturday!

by titmouse Wed, July 7, 2010

How funky is your chicken, how funky is your chicken? How loose is your goose? Our goose is totally loose! So come on all you HOT fans, and shake your caboose! I mean hot, in the literal sense. You should bring a personal fan because THE HEAT IS ON this Saturday July 10th at The Hangar, Downsview Park as the Smoke City Betties take on the Death Track Dolls in ToRD’s third regular season game.

sings It’s gettin hot in here, so take off all your clothes end singing <— pretend I didn’t just burst into song.

(don’t worry, we don’t have the heat on, that would be stupid. but we also don’t have AC, so it will be warm. cool down with a nice beer, eh?)

The Betties will be hitting the track hard, hoping to recoup some of the street cred they lost when they took on the Gores in the season opener. They’ll have their work cut out for them, because the Dolls are fiercly chasing the win – still burned by their close loss to the Chicks Ahoy.

– Obligatory Deets –
When: Saturday July 10th, doors @ 6:30pm, bout at 7:30pm
Where: 75 Carl Hall Rd unit 2, The Hangar, Downsview Park, Toronto
Tickets on sale now! Uncomfortable shopping online? Check out the list of our fine retailers, or take the risk of buying your ticket at the door!

Chicks Ahoy Take Down the Dolls

by titmouse Mon, June 14, 2010

WHAT A GREAT GAME!!

Last Saturday the Dolls faced off against the Chicks in an epic derby battle. I say epic, because the bout was cussing fantastic! It was so good, I forgot to blink, and then my contacts tried to fall out. True Story.

Neck-and-neck the entire time, the Dolls and Chicks traded off the lead for the entire first half. It was plain to see that both teams wanted their first win of the season. The Dolls pulled ahead right at the end of the first, thanks to a massive 24(25?) point jam courtesy of Audrey Hellborn – it was AMAZING! The first half ended with the Dolls up 76-58.

The second period kicked off with the Chicks clamouring to get ahead. Heavy hits were tossed around by both teams – jammers Demolition Dawn and Land Shark of the Death Track Dolls went down from some massive hits laid on them by the Chicks Ahoy blockers. Despite that, the Dolls held on to the lead until 3 minutes left in the bout, when the Chicks jammed to their first lead in the second half, pulling ahead 112 – 109. Encouraged by their slight lead, the Chicks stepped up their game play, employing perfect strategy to hold the Dolls jammers back, while they ran through to increase their lead.

It worked out for them, and the bout ended 121 – 109, Chicks Ahoy!

Congratulations to both teams for an EXCELLENTLY deployed bout!

Excited for your next derby fix? Stay tuned for details on Clam Slam – Friday July 2nd!

SEASON OPENER RESULTS: GORES CRUSH THE BETTIES 1 comments

by titmouse Tue, June 1, 2010

Experience won out over determination this weekend as the Gores beat the Betties 248 – 58. Sporting a roster consisting of 10 new skaters, 3 returning Betties, and one former Gore, facing off against a mostly experienced Gore lineup, the Smoke City Betties had their work cut out for them from the start.

The bout kicked off with the Gores quickly gaining the lead. Their excellent jammers zoomed around the Betties like Road Runner playing tricks on Wild E. Coyote. Rookie Gore skaters primarily filled blocking roles, hanging near the back and annoying Betties jammers (especially you, Hurlin Wall).

Through tough odds, the Betties kept their games faces on, and perservered through two tough periods – as hard as the Gores dished it, the Betties kept coming back for more.

Hella THANKS! to Box Wars for an awesome half-time show – you guys rock!!

CN Power Brutalizes the Vixens 199-49 1 comments

by titmouse Mon, March 1, 2010

we kicked their butts!

Well… the title pretty much says it all. Those of you who weren’t there, you missed something preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeety spectacular. CN Power was out in their finest form, knocking the Vixens around all over the track and skating circles around them (literally!). By 5 minutes into the bout, CN Power had already managed to pull ahead 24-2.

That didn’t seem like a big enough lead to Landshark, who on her next Jam skated through the pack 4 times for a total of 15 points! Not to be outdone, Defecaitlin followed up in the next jam for another whopping 15 points! WOW!

The insane racking up of points continued, and by the half CN Power was ahead 108-20. CN Power fans were going crazy, but I think the ones supporting the Vixens were pretty stunned.

While the teams chugged water and discussed strategy for the second half, the rockin’ tones of Ginger St James & The Grinders filled the Hangar with dancing fans – I saw your foot bopping, don’t try to hide it!

After 20 minutes of awesome music, merch, pizza, and beer buying, fans ran back to their seats to see what would happen in the conclusion of the bout. With a sharp whistle blow, they were off!

CN Power didn’t relent – they just kept givin’er to the Rideau Valley Vixens. There was a tense moment when Landshark barrel rolled over Mega Bouche, but she somehow made it look graceful.

Down to the wire and clearly striving to hit 200 points, the final jam ended with a successful Passing the Star play (see 25:07 in part 2 of the video) as Landshark and Mach Wheels teamed up to rack the points up to 200. Unfortunately, the Jam clock ran out before she could make it around a second time to score the elusive 1 more point. Le Sigh!

Regardless, a great game played by all!! Thanks to RVV, their refs and their fans for coming to our humble home to challenge us! Better luck next time?

To relive the excitement, or if you missed the bout (SHAME!!), check out Mr. Force’s bout footage at http://www.layer9.ca

CN Power sponsor Balmshell hit up the bout on the weekend to show their support for the team. Check them out!

They also put together this sweet little video capturing the experience (does everyone have mad video skillz but me???)

It was a brutal bout from the start. At half-time the CUbs had pulled ahead of the cougars 82 – 16 (ouch). All the teams looked like they were having fun just being on their skates though – I definitely saw at least one leg whip, and a few successful passing the star attempts!! Way to level up ladies! In the second half the Cougars stepped it up, more than tripling their first period score – unfortunately, the Cubs were unrelenting, and kept pounding in the hurt.

FInal Score: Cougars 58, Cubs 175

Congratulations cubs!

Gore-Gore Rollergirls Take the Boot!!

by titmouse Fri, December 18, 2009

The setting: Downsview Park. Quiet. Isolated. Remotely located north of Toronto. From 4pm onward, cars slowly creep over to one of the buildings at 75 Carl Hall Rd. Passengers disembark loaded TTC buses and patiently gather by the door. Inside, ladies stretch, decorate, set up, skate.

Around 7pm the sh*t hits the fan.

A crowd of over 1100 cheers wildly as the Gore-Gore Rollergirls and the Smoke City Betties enter the track, each team thrilled and determined to win the Boot. The Gores are looking to reclaim the trophy they won in 2007, but lost in 2008, while the Betties want payback for their only loss this season.

The whistle blows and their off! A hard-hitting, fast skating period ensues, with each team giving as good as they got. The Gores gained a lead early on in the first period, and skated hard to keep it. The Betties, not to get discouraged, gave it their all and started dishing out hits left, right and center, to the thunderous roar of the crowd. The period ended with the Gores ahead 62 – 41 with a skater in the penalty box for each team.

There was much resting and strategic planning over halftime. The crowd remained entertained by the supreme breakdancing skillz of the Fly Antics Crew. The merch line was overwhelmed with people craving their own little piece of ToRD. Before you knew it, halftime was over and it was time for the final half.

Skating their hearts out, both teams clammoured for the winning spot. The Betties came on strong early in the second half, trying to close the gap on the Gores, who retaliated in the following jams to increase their lead. The Gores held their lead through to the end, but not without difficulty – the Betties kept right on them, forcing everyone to put out their best. The last whistle blew and the crowd went wild! Gores take the boot, 129-88.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Gores on their win in an action-packed 2009! You gave it your all and it paid off.

2009 championship game!

by monichrome Wed, November 4, 2009

This is the game you’ve been waiting for all season! In this last game of regulation season, we’ll find out who’s going to take home the coveted “boot” and be the next champions of the Toronto Roller Derby league!!!

You will need to be there to find out!

The Gore-Gore Rollergirls, 2007 season champions and 2008 runner ups, are defending their currently untarnished record with a win at every game they have played. Having already defeated the Smoke City Betties once in regulation play, they’re on the road to taking home The Boot once again, but the Betties are not to be underestimated! The 3rd place team of this years Beast of the East tournament has been steadily getting stronger with each game – and having already played the Gories, they have an understanding of what it’s going to take to win, and a taste for blood!

Join us to find out who walks away champions!
