Last Regular Season Bout!

by titmouse Wed, September 1, 2010

It’s the LAST BOUT ever of the regular season! (ha, almost caught you there)

Saturday, September 11th come down to The Hangar, Downsview Park to watch the Chicks Ahoy take on the Smoke City Betties! When these two teams last met in 2009, it was a tight game that kept everyone on the edge of their seat – and the Betties took it home 68 – 61. This year brings us different teams – with a heavy veteran roster, the Chicks are fighting strong. They put up a vicious battle against the Death Track Dolls, trading blows and the lead until the very end, and had a heartbreaking loss against the undefeated Gore-Gore Rollergirls. The Betties are taking a toll this season, sporting two losses in their ToRD regular season, but they have fire in their eyes, rocket juice in their skates, and a few bouts under their belts… who knows what will happen! You can be the first to know – but you gotta come to the bout :D

Tickets are on sale now in stores and online. To serve you better, we’ve switched out online ticketing solution from PayPal to BrownPaperTickets, so don’t be alarmed when you’re sent to their site to make your purchase. BrownPaperTickets is a fair-trade ticketing company, and the choice of derby leagues across North America! Also, we’ve changed our ticketing structure a little. Gone are the 10-pack tickets, and in are 6-pack tickets! For when your group just isn’t quite 10-ppl big, but you still want to save money! As always, individual tickets are still on sale.

Going to buy your ticket at the door? You can save too! TORD wants to help in the fight against hunger and is holding a food drive to support the Daily Bread Food Bank at the Chicks/Betties bout, Saturday September 11th.

Daily Bread Food Bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that is fighting to end hunger in our communities. Every year thousands of people across Toronto rely on food banks. Daily Bread serves these people through neighbourhood food banks and meal programs in over 170 member agencies.

Bring non-perishable food items to the Bout on September 11th to help support the cause and receive a $3 discount on your ticket!

Double Header Wrap Up

by titmouse Mon, August 23, 2010

I must say, I’m very proud of our D-VAS. You ladies rocked the track something fierce, showing the DRRD that ToRD’s farmies are NOT people you want to mess with.

The D-VAS faced off against Durham Region Roller Derby. It was the first bout for both teams, but all the girls looked cool under pressure. At the beginning of the bout, both teams seemed evently matched. They traded points back and forth, the game remaining close throught the entire first period. The score was 45-32 D-VAS at the half. After a refreshing but brief halftime, both teams hit the track once more. Some sweet pep-talking must have gone on in the D-VAS locker room, because they returned full force, settled into their element. The D-VAS started pulling ahead, consistently building up a greater lead over DRRD, and it soon became clear they were determined to be the winners. They gave it their all, and it paid off!
Final: 105-63 D-VAS

Now with the pressure on, CN Power hoped to follow the D-VAS win with a victory over the Queen City Rollergirls travel team, the Lake Effect Furies, for a total ToRD take-down weekend. Buffalo totally brought their A-game with them – barely a minute after hitting the track, you could tell CN Power would have their work cut out for them. The Furies were hard hitting, and had all their stragety ducks lined up in a row. When the first period ended, it was 38-53 Furies. Returning strong from halftime, CN Power began to close the gap, helped by an amazing 15 point jam by DefeCaitlin. The fury of both teams’ playing would come at a price though – Candy Crossbones and Brim Stone went down hard during separate jams, laying still on the track and quieting the crowd. No EMS required though – these are tough fems, and they got back up and returned to their benches under their own power. It was a hard-fought battle, but in the end the Furies were able to keep the lead and win the bout.
Final: 110-79 Lake Effect Furies.

Thanks to everyone who came out – the girls LOVE the crowd and the atmosphere you help us create!

Missed the bout, or want a recap? Hit up ToRD.tv and Layer9 over the next while for bout footage and skater interviews!

Important Info about Saturday's Bout!

by titmouse Tue, July 20, 2010

Hello lovely fans! Just a few tidbits of info relating to getting to the game on Saturday we wanted you to be aware of:

1) It’s Jamaica Day this Saturday and there will be a celebration at Downsview Park that may affect the traffic and parking situation around The Hangar (but, there might also be delicious beef patties kicking around the area, and awesome dancing)

2) There will be work on the subway line between Lawrence West station and Downsview station all weekend, with the subway between those stations replaced by frequent shuttle buses.

Please keep both these facts in mind when making your travel plans to witness the most HARD HITTING action this weekend.

UPDATE:
Some alternate route suggestions for you!

OPTION 1 – Take the Yonge Subway Line to Sheppard-Yonge Station and hop on the 84 Sheppard West Bus going westbound. Get off at Tuscan and wait for the 101 Downsview Park that will take you right to the hangar (or you can walk in from there).

OPTION 2 – Take the 41 Keele Bus north from Keele Subway station and get off at Sheppard Ave. Catch the 106 York University, 108 Downsview, or 84 Sheppard West going eastbound. Get off at Tuscan and wait for the 101 Downsview Park that will take you right to the hangar (or you can walk in from there).

Just a reminder that tickets are on sale online until the end of Friday, and in stores right now!

Chicks Ahoy! vs Gore Gore Rollergirls - July 24th!

by titmouse Wed, July 14, 2010

CA vs. GGRG - July 24!

On Saturday July 24th, the Chicks Ahoy will take on the Gore Gore Roller Girls. This is the second bout of 2010 for both these teams, and they’re coming into it with 1-0 (W-L) records – but that’s going to change after this bout, as there are no ties in derby. Only one team of feisty ladies can go home with the win.

The last time these two teams faced off was the 2009 Season Opener, during which the Gores took home the win. The face of both teams has changed since then, so its open to opinions and fans as to who will win. Let the bickering begin!

Tickets are on sale now online and in stores near you!

Cambridge indie band Dérive will be providing entertainment at the halftime – non-stop fun, music, and good times, courtesy of ToRD!

Dolls Claim Victory Over the Betties 213 - 53

by titmouse Tue, July 13, 2010

Saturday July 10th, the Death Track Dolls faced off against the Smoke City Betties at The Hangar. It was the second bout of the season for both teams – both teams had lost their previous bout and were gunning for the win.

The Dolls claimed an early lead over the Betties, putting on an impressive display of teamwork and cooperation. They held on and grew their lead through to halftime, and continued the trend throughout the second period. Even as the difference in scores grew, the Betties didn’t tire or give up – they kept fighting through each and every minute, team spirit carrying them through to the end.

Final Score: DTD 213, SCB 53.

Congratulations to the Dolls on their victory. Mad props to The Weirdies for an awesome half time show, and thanks to all the volenteers who helped make the bout happen!

Check out ToRD.tv for exclusive bout footage courtesy of Mr. Force, and stay tuned for interviews from the bout!

Smoke City Betties vs. Death Track Dolls - This Saturday!

by titmouse Wed, July 7, 2010

How funky is your chicken, how funky is your chicken? How loose is your goose? Our goose is totally loose! So come on all you HOT fans, and shake your caboose! I mean hot, in the literal sense. You should bring a personal fan because THE HEAT IS ON this Saturday July 10th at The Hangar, Downsview Park as the Smoke City Betties take on the Death Track Dolls in ToRD’s third regular season game.

sings It’s gettin hot in here, so take off all your clothes end singing <— pretend I didn’t just burst into song.

(don’t worry, we don’t have the heat on, that would be stupid. but we also don’t have AC, so it will be warm. cool down with a nice beer, eh?)

The Betties will be hitting the track hard, hoping to recoup some of the street cred they lost when they took on the Gores in the season opener. They’ll have their work cut out for them, because the Dolls are fiercly chasing the win – still burned by their close loss to the Chicks Ahoy.

Chicks Ahoy Take Down the Dolls

by titmouse Mon, June 14, 2010

WHAT A GREAT GAME!!

Last Saturday the Dolls faced off against the Chicks in an epic derby battle. I say epic, because the bout was cussing fantastic! It was so good, I forgot to blink, and then my contacts tried to fall out. True Story.

Neck-and-neck the entire time, the Dolls and Chicks traded off the lead for the entire first half. It was plain to see that both teams wanted their first win of the season. The Dolls pulled ahead right at the end of the first, thanks to a massive 24(25?) point jam courtesy of Audrey Hellborn – it was AMAZING! The first half ended with the Dolls up 76-58.

The second period kicked off with the Chicks clamouring to get ahead. Heavy hits were tossed around by both teams – jammers Demolition Dawn and Land Shark of the Death Track Dolls went down from some massive hits laid on them by the Chicks Ahoy blockers. Despite that, the Dolls held on to the lead until 3 minutes left in the bout, when the Chicks jammed to their first lead in the second half, pulling ahead 112 – 109. Encouraged by their slight lead, the Chicks stepped up their game play, employing perfect strategy to hold the Dolls jammers back, while they ran through to increase their lead.

It worked out for them, and the bout ended 121 – 109, Chicks Ahoy!

Congratulations to both teams for an EXCELLENTLY deployed bout!

Excited for your next derby fix? Stay tuned for details on Clam Slam – Friday July 2nd!

SEASON OPENER RESULTS: GORES CRUSH THE BETTIES 1 comments

by titmouse Tue, June 1, 2010

Experience won out over determination this weekend as the Gores beat the Betties 248 – 58. Sporting a roster consisting of 10 new skaters, 3 returning Betties, and one former Gore, facing off against a mostly experienced Gore lineup, the Smoke City Betties had their work cut out for them from the start.

The bout kicked off with the Gores quickly gaining the lead. Their excellent jammers zoomed around the Betties like Road Runner playing tricks on Wild E. Coyote. Rookie Gore skaters primarily filled blocking roles, hanging near the back and annoying Betties jammers (especially you, Hurlin Wall).

Through tough odds, the Betties kept their games faces on, and perservered through two tough periods – as hard as the Gores dished it, the Betties kept coming back for more.

Hella THANKS! to Box Wars for an awesome half-time show – you guys rock!!

Not to disrupt all the fun, but a I wanted to mention that Season Ticket sales will be closing Wednesday at 8am. Our first bout is quickly approaching – this Saturday, May 29th, last seasons Champions the Gore-Gore Rollergirls will face off against the 2009 2nd place team, the Smoke City Betties! The last time these two teams faced off, it was the 2009 Season Championships! Since then, the Betties have undergone a serious facelift, while the Gores have suppliemented their lineups with new talent. It’s anyone’s guess as to what’s going to happen! You should be there.

Individual bout tickets are on sale now. However, I know you don’t want to see JUST this one bout. Hit up the tickets page before Wednesday, May 26th, to get yourself an exclusive ticket to all the 2010 ToRD action – via a SEASONS PASS! It’s the shiznit. You should be all over that like cheese on a cheezburger. I know I am.

True North Climbing - Open House!

by titmouse Wed, April 14, 2010

This Saturday April 17th, True North Climbing (75 Carl Hall Rd, Unit 14) will be having an open house to show off their facility – yay rock climbing!!

From John Gross, owner: “On Saturday we welcome all visitors to see the facility free of the usual requirement of signing a liability waiver before entering the climbing area.We will have demonstration climbing in a few areas, demonstrations of slacklining, and staff will be on hand to explain the facility and the services we offer.”

History
On March 27th, our Downsview neighbours True North Climbing opened their doors with a bang – with their inaugural Tour de Bloc bouldering competition. 218 climbers competed for over $5,000 in cash and prizes, and it was an exciting way to open our doors. Since then they have been building their membership and settling into operating the business.

Quad City Chaos Recap!

by titmouse Tue, March 30, 2010

Sorry for the delay folks, I’ve been recovering from QCC – but now I’m back with all my journalistic splendor!

This past weekend Toronto hosted Montreal, Vancouver, and our neighbours Hamilton in the first ever Quad City Chaos tournament! It was a smashingly delicous weekend of hard-hitting Canadian derby action. Keep reading for the tasty rundown.

Game 1 – CN Power vs. the Terminal City All-Stars
CN Power kicked off QCC sporting the snazzy new CN Power logo – same bright pink tops, more CN Tower fist squeezing action. CN Power took first Lead Jammer to rack up points, and were off to a strong start. They maintained the head through out the first half, entering intermission up 66-24.

The All-Stars returned in the second half determined to catch up, steadily clawing back points to close the gap. With two minutes left in the second half, the crowd gasped as DefeCaitlin hit the floor and stayed down from a nasty elbow to the head. She got back up under her own power but sat out the rest of the bout.

By the last jam, the All-Stars had come back to within 15 points of CN Power, but unfortunately for them Lunch Box gained Lead Jammer status, and ran out the clock.

Final Score: 97 – 79 CN Power.

Game 2 – CN Power vs. Hammer City Eh! Team
With only an hour’s rest since the last bout, CN Power hit the track (with a few line up changes). The Eh! Team got a strong start and lead for the first 15 minutes, thanks in part to an 18 point jam by Carla Coma. CN Power players, tired but determined, used their second wind to pull ahead 38-36. Alarmed, the Eh! Team pulled a sneaky Passing the Star to pull back the lead 41-38. The first half ended with Hammer City ahead 55-49.

The second period started off slow – both teams had revisited their game plans during the break, and a hardcore game of derby strategy was to be watched. Hammer City holds on to their slight lead through most of the second half, until Lunch Box pulls them ahead 72-70 with a 10 point jam. It was an exciting end to the bout, as both teams spent the last 10 minutes neck and neck, literally swapping lead position every jam until the inevitable – a tie, going into the final jams of the bout. CN Power pulled ahead by two points heading into the last jam. Starting with 32 seconds left in the second half, CN Power gained Lead Jammer status as the clock ran out and they called the jam.

Final Score: 89 – 87 CN Power.

Game 3 – MTLRD New Skids on the Block vs. Terminal City All-Stars
Unfortunatly, I missed this game, because I’m an idiot who wore 4” platform boots all day not realizing she would be standing on her feet for 12 hours, and I had to not be doing that anymore. Real smart titmouse. So instead, I’ll present you with my version of what I’m sure happened:

NSOTB skated out and took an early lead in the bout. Driven into a fit of rage by the vibrant neon colours of the MTL uniforms, the five Terminal City skaters on the track, lead by Avi Hater, used their magic decoder rings to transform into a HUGE PREHISTORIC DRAGONFLY. They zipped towards the MTL pack, deafening the fans with the buzz of their speedy wings. Alarmed, but unwilling to give up that easily MTL started stomping their feet and chanting. The Hangar filled with an unearthly roar, and the floor shook, as a GIANT DINOSAUR burst forth from the center of the track, toppling the poor Refs and Stats people into the nearby bleachers. Luckily for all of you peoples, I left my camera behind and conveniently pointed at the track recording in video mode, so that I could share the amazement with all of you.

It totally went exactly like that, I swear.

Final Score: 160 – 55 New Skids on the Block

Game 4 – MTLRD New Skids on the Block vs. CN Power
Somewhat freshly rested (but still an idiot wearing boots with heels) and caffinated, I returned to witness MTL at it again – totally showing it to our CN Power team. To give them credit, CN Power didn’t look like they were making it easy. They were a bunch of mean, pink, skating machines, consistently getting in MTLs face and making them work for their win. Those ladies have some crazy good skill though – cutting through the pack like butter, and a preternatural sense of where everyone on the track is, so they ran away with the win.

Final Score: 229 – 45 New Skids on the Block

Game 5 – Hammer City Eh! Team vs. Terminal City All-Stars
You could tell from the start that both these teams had it in for the other. Both teams were evenly matched, and the game played close all afternoon, often times with only 10 points differentiating the teams. Terminal City held the lead for most of the first half, until the second last Jam when Hammer City pulled ahead 46-44. With the All-Star’s jammer in the box for the last jam of the first half, Hammer City powered through for an additional 14 points, ending the half up 60-44.

Hammer City dominated the second half, while the All-Stars worked to close the point gap. The most exciting moment game at the end, when the All-Stars were only down by 14 points. The last jam kicked off and Rollergirl (TC) took lead jammer – what followed was the greatest display of SERIOUS pack strategy I’ve ever seen. Terminal City closed around a member of the Eh! Team and slowed the whole pack down almost to a stop – Rollergirl whipped around the track and through the pack in no time. The All-Stars tried to hold the pack down for her to come around again but Hammer City has caught on to the plan and won’t be tricked by the same stragecy again. The fans are all on their feet cheering wildly for a last minute come back, but to no avail.

Final Score: 115 – 104 Eh! Team

There is a Draft, close the door... 2 comments

by titmouse Mon, February 22, 2010

Friday Night

Tomorrow is the draft and though I say I am not worried, it is 1:30 am and sleep is avoiding me like the plague. Jerk!

After 6 months of wanting to be on a team, any team, the night before finally makes me wise to the team I am losing. Together we learned that falling only means getting back up, fear is a waste of time and sticking together and communicating makes any obstacle obsolete and everything an instant good time… just add derby girl.

I know tomorrow is going to be intense but so long as I am armed with beer and have a cavalry of quality ladies at my side, I am excited to battle awkwardness and butterflies. I don’t know who will be lucky enough to have any of us…but, if this is just the beginning of derby love, I am a happy addict.

Draft Day

The Draft was even more nerve wracking and dramatic than anticipated. During the Cubs VS Cougs match, I stole glances of fellow farmlings adjusting their ‘everything is fine’ look and wished I could see if my own was holding up.

In the purgatory hours between the match and the phone calls we sit at Squirley’s, where the pitchers could not come fast enough. We make easy conversation and manage to convince ourselves that we are not worried, just excited…then come the phone calls and my confidence flees like sleep did the night before. Traitor!

Five of us farmlings present one on standby at the airport….

Ring. A Bettie, beers clink….silence…. Ring. Another Bettie, beers clink…. ‘we are so happy for you’ ...silence...... A Gore, beers clink….. Silence.

This silence seems to stretch on longer than the last. I check my phone for the infinity billionth time that night. It just lays there and I feel both relief and unbearable twisting in my stomach to discover it works fine. More silence. My phone makes a noise but it is a text. I slam buttons so my phone can focus on phone calls and it is announced that a Doll only needs to standby for a plane. We clink our glasses and the silence falls again. Pacing starts but I am pinned in the corner. “Where are you going? Take your phone!!!”

Ring ring...not my phone. Another Bettie, beers do their clink thing and I can no longer make eye contact. I am surrounded by the smiling faces of my friends but it’s their ‘it’s ok’ eyes I avoid. Stupid phone!

Then finally I get the call…GORE GORE ROLLER GIRL. Now that the last of the five got the call, we all burst the awkward bubble with shrieking and cheering and scare the other patrons who made the wrong choice for a quiet night.

We cannot stand still. Jumping and giggling, of the variety that can only be found following incredible tension, takes control of our bodies and then the trash talking starts! We can almost see how our new teams will fashion our skills and help make us the particular roller girl we are going to be. The only problem is, our levels of comfort and adrenaline are so high, we have no problems letting each other know how we intend to use our skills.

Next on the agenda is the keg party to meet our teams. The beer is spiked with excitement. All the teams are convinced that they have the winning combination. I look around and believe everyone. ToRD 2010 is going to be off the hook and I am going to sleep like a baby tonight.

Shera Venge
2010 Gore Gore Rollergirl

(ToRD’s 2010 draft happened this past weekend – stay tuned for updated team rosters!)
