2014 Battle For The Boot!

It all comes down to this: Toronto Roller Derby’s 8th annual home team Championship, The Battle For The Boot! After a long, hard-fought regular season, we are down to two teams who will duke it out on the flat track on Saturday October 18th at The Bunker.

dollsThe Death Track Dolls finished the 2014 regular season in first place, going undefeated in the regular season for the second consecutive year, and earned a bye directly to the final. Led by captains Getcha Kicks and Android W.K., the Dolls saw nearly half of their roster turn over from 2013. With a core of experienced skaters supplemented by a draft class that combined freshies and experienced transfer skaters, the Dolls surprised many by picking up where they left off in 2013, and return to the Battle for the Boot, for the second year in a row, and their second appearance all time. The last time the Dolls played a game that counted was back in May, so the question is, can they regain the momentum that carried them through the Spring, or will they be starting from scratch?

goresAfter a one-year absence, The Gore-Gore Rollergirls return to the Battle For The Boot final, their seventh appearance all time – in fact, 2013 was the only time the Gores haven’t qualified. Going 2-1 in the regular season, the Gores finished in second place, and on September 27 defeated the third-place Chicks Ahoy! in the Semi-Final, 152-97. (read The Derby Nerd’s excellent recap of the Semi-Final – which also featured the final D-VAS game of the year – here.) Captains Santa Muerte and Kandy Barr have been building up the Gores all year long to this moment, as they’ve gotten stronger with every game they’ve played, including a historic title at Montreal’s Beast of the East tournament in April that had some saying that 2014 is the Year of the Gore. Right now, including September’s Semi-Final win, momentum would appear to be on the Gores’ side heading towards the Final, but can they keep it up and dethrone the defending champion Dolls?

goresThere’s one way to find out, and that’s to be at The Bunker Saturday October 18 to catch it all live! This will be the final ToRD event at Downsview for 2014, and concludes our home season, so be sure you don’t miss out! And we’re not going to name names at this point, but every year in the off season, there are always a couple of skaters who retire. This could be your last chance to see some of them in action – make sure they know you care!

The Battle for the Boot goes at 7pm. First up at 5, the Smoke City Betties are hitting the track, hosting the Striking Vikings of the Renegade Derby Dames from Alliston, ON. This will also be the Betties’ final game of the year, as they finish out of the playoffs for the first time since 2011. Get there early to get a comfortable spot in the bleachers, or bring a blanket or chair for trackside viewing in the suicide seats! Doors open at The Bunker at 4pm.

Admission at the door at The Bunker will be $18.00, but $12.00 Advance Tickets are now available online on Brown Paper Tickets, and old-fashioned paper tickets (also $12.00) are available at the following outlets:
